Where to Start With Shadow Work

A first look at the parts of yourself you would rather not examine.

Shadow work means turning toward material you have been keeping out of view. Not to fix it, and not to perform insight about it. Just to look. This is a first pass, and it works best if you answer faster than you think, before the editing starts.

1. Who is the last person who irritated you out of proportion?

Name them and the exact thing they did. Out of proportion is the operative phrase. Ordinary annoyance is not the material here.

2. What would you have to admit for that reaction to make sense?

Try the least flattering explanation first. That you want what they have. That you do the same thing. That they got away with something you do not let yourself do.

3. What do you not let yourself want out loud?

Not the acceptable version. The one you would be embarrassed to have overheard.

4. What did you skip or soften above?

You know which one. Go back and write the version you did not write.
