The Room Where You Change

Notice who you become in different rooms and what the switch costs.

Everyone adjusts. The question is which adjustment costs you something, and which room demands the largest performance. This locates the gap between the self you present and the one doing the presenting.

1. In which room are you least yourself?

A workplace, a parent's kitchen, a group of old friends, a partner's family. Name the room.

2. What specifically do you change?

Volume, vocabulary, opinions, posture, how much you know, how much you need. Be granular about it.

3. What are you protecting by changing it?

A relationship, an income, someone's picture of you, your own safety. Some of these are worth protecting.

4. What have you lost track of by performing it this long?

Long performances become load-bearing. What did you stop being sure of about yourself?

5. What is one thing you would not change next time?

Small enough to actually hold in that room. An opinion, a silence you do not rush to fill, a need stated plainly once.
